Microsoft has announced that the Remote Desktop app for Windows will be discontinued on May 27, 2025. Users who rely on it for Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box should transition to the Windows App, a modern replacement offering a seamless remote access experience.
What is the Windows App?
The Windows App is a unified platform designed for streaming Windows environments across devices, including Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and web browsers. It provides better performance, enhanced security, and an improved user experience compared to the old Remote Desktop app.
Key Features
✅ Centralized Access – Connect to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box in one place
✅ Multi-Monitor Support – Use multiple displays for enhanced productivity
✅ Dynamic Display Resolutions – Optimized visuals across devices ✅ Customizable Home Screen – Quick access to frequently used resources
✅ Device Redirection – Use local devices like webcams, printers, and storage in remote sessions

Important Notes
After May 27, 2025, the old Remote Desktop app will no longer connect to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, or Microsoft Dev Box.
The classic Remote Desktop Connection app (MSTSC.exe) will still work for traditional RDP connections until RDP support is added to the Windows App.
